Backorders and partial shipments
Ship what's on the shelf, and the rest stays open until more stock arrives.
What it does
When an order wants more than you have, TaroStack marks it Short and lets you ship what's there. Shopify shows the order as partially fulfilled until the rest ships.
When to use it
Use it when you let a product sell past zero, or when a shelf came up short on the day.
Before you start
In Shopify, turn on Continue selling when out of stock for the product. Then place an order for more than you have.
Steps
- Open Sales and open the order. The list and the order both say Short.
- Press Ship, change the quantity to what's on hand, and press Ship at the foot of the sheet.
- Bring in the rest. Receive a delivery, finish a batch, or adjust stock up.
- Open the order again, press Ship, and ship the rest.
What you should see
After the first shipment, Shopify shows Partially fulfilled, and the order in TaroStack shows how many of the units are out. After the last shipment, Shopify shows Fulfilled, and TaroStack shows Shipped.
- Order for 20 with 8 on hand
- Short
- Ship 8: Partially fulfilled
- 12 arrive
- Ship 12: Fulfilled
Good to know
Shopify's available count can go below zero while an order is short. In a test with 20 ordered and 8 on hand, shipping 8 left Shopify at 0 on hand, 12 committed and −12 available. Adding 12 brought available back to 0, and shipping them left all three at 0.
TaroStack's rule on Allow stock to go below zero decides whether you can ship more than the shelf holds. See Stock and purchasing rules.
